On January 1, 2003 Energie Graz, the legal successor of the Grazer Stadtwerke GmbH, has entered all legal transactions concerning the area of energy and, thus, supplies the inhabitants of the city with electricity, natural gas as well as district heat. Since the January 1, 2006 the Stromnetz Graz GmbH & Co KG, a subsidiary company of Energie Graz, is responsible for the mains operation. This parting according to company law, labour law and tax law is based on the ElWOG-Novelle and the appointments of the EU-Standards 2003/54/EG.

On the July 4, 2002 the district council of Gra, owner of the Grazer Stadtwerke AG, decided to separate the divisions electricity, natural gas and district heating from the Grazer Stadtwerke AG and to insert them into a new company, Energie Graz. Henceforth, Energie Graz is a subsidiary company of Holding Graz – Kommunale Dienstleistungen GmbH, Energie Steiermark AG, as well as Stadt Graz.
